Toledo police are searching for answers after the body of a baby was found in an abandoned car on the city’s west side last Friday.
“There was some odor coming from the vehicle and the owner went to investigate it,” Toledo Police Lt. Joe Heffernan told WTOL-TV.
The body of the baby boy, believed to be about 2 months old, was badly decomposed, and officials do not know how long it may have been in the car. They are also investigating whether the little boy was alive, or already dead, when his body was placed in the vehicle.
WTOL-TV reports a coroner conducted an autopsy, but was unable to determine a cause of death because of the advanced state of decomposition.
“I’m sure that somebody knows the person who had this child,” Heffernan said, “and we need to hear from those people, or the parents themselves, so we can get some closure on this. This child deserves that at the very minimum.”
The Toledo Blade reports that officials are also investigating whether there is any connection between the baby and the owner of the car.
