Assurant closure in Dayton impacts 150 jobs

Assurant Specialty Property, one of Clark County’s largest employers, will close its Dayton office next year and transfer those workers to its Springfield location, company officials confirmed Wednesday.

The move impacts about 150 Dayton-area workers, a company spokesman said.

“We have notified employees and our landlord that we plan to consolidate our Dayton and Springfield staffs at our Springfield campus next fall,” the company said in a statement. “A need for additional work space prompted us to open a satellite office in Dayton in 2013; now, with available space at our Springfield campus, we have decided to consolidate our staff at one metro location.”

A company email to employees obtained by this newspaper said the Dayton office would close in October 2016. The move to Springfield will take place gradually over the next year, the email said.

In June 2013, Assurant announced plans to hire at least 200 new employees and open a satellite office at 4646 Needmore Road in northeast Dayton.

At the time, the specialty insurance firm employed about 1,900 at its office campus in Springfield, near Interstate 70. The company said it needed additional staff because of client growth, and the Springfield offices were full.

In January, this newspaper reported that Assurant cut more than 35 workers at its Springfield office as part of a restructuring of the business. The company also cut about 75 jobs in fall 2014 as a result of a loss of business from a client.

Assurant Specialty Property provides insurance and related services in partnership with financial institutions and other major clients. The company is one of Clark County’s largest employers with about 2,300 workers overall.
