University of Dayton graduate hopes to sing his way to the top on ‘The Voice’

Back in September, Max Boyle, a recent graduate of the University of Dayton and Toledo native, impressed the judges on “The Voice” with his rendition of Johnny Cash’s “Wayfaring Stranger.”

In fact, from the moment that Boyle, 23, found himself on that stage, he has only received positive feedback from judges Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, John Legend, and Kelly Clarkson, who saved him from being eliminated in a knockout round of the competition. In the last episode of the show that appeared on Nov. 12, it was revealed that Boyle would be sticking around to represent Team Kelly in the final 13.

Despite the high stakes of this televised competition, Boyle has seemingly handled the stress with ease, showcasing his impressive vocal range and musical prowess with ease. This supernatural ease with performing might be as a result from growing up in a musical family, where, as a freshman in high school, began singing as the lead in his school choir after an injury prevented him from playing sports. After high school, Boyle attended the University of Dayton and graduated with a degree in psychology.

Throughout his time in college and beyond, Boyle has never completely shelved his talent, releasing an EP entitled “Something to Hold” in 2018, available on Spotify and Apple Music. Boyle emulates the work of similarly talented solo artists like Ed Sheeran, Bon Iver, and John Mayer.

A live episode of “The Voice,” airs tonight, Nov. 18, at 8 p.m.

The Top 13 contestants will perform live tonight in the first of the themed shows, “Dedications.” Each contestant will pick a song that means something to them and sing it for someone special in their life. Two will be eliminated Tuesday, and the remaining Top 11 will be featured on the Nov. 25 show, which will be “Fan Pick.” Songs will be selected by viewers via the official Voice app.
