Troy Strawberry Festival canceled due to coronavirus concerns

One of the most delicious festivals of summer has been canceled. 
The Troy Strawberry Festival, Inc. Board of Directors announced the cancellation of the festival slated for June 6 and June 7 in a press release today, April 3.

“We extend our sincere appreciation to the members of the Festival committee as they prepared for the festival over the past year as well as our non-profit organizations, arts and craft vendors, performers and sponsors who were primed to celebrate with us,” Linda Roth, chairman of the 2020 Troy Strawberry Festival, said as part of the release. “Our priority continues to be the health and safety of our volunteers, guests and all Festival supporters and as such we are following the recommendations of national and global health experts.”

The festival is just the latest cancellation due to the pandemic.

The  Strawberry Festival board says it based its decision on “an abundance of caution.”

The 44th annual event was to be presented by Kettering Health Network.

Considered the kick-off of the Dayton summer festival season, this year’s festival was to feature more than 200 arts and crafts exhibitors, activities and entertainment on two stages.

It attracts as many as 150,000 people annually for a list of strawberry-themed foods that includes donuts, homemade strawberry shortcake, strawberry salsa and  strawberry lemon shakeups

The food is served by nonprofits and other Troy organizations.

The 2018 festival generated $ 374,938 for the 71 participating organizations, according to earlier reporting from this news organization.

“Ultimately, the Festival is committed to providing a fun, family friendly festival that supports our local nonprofits. We are looking at ways we can do that over the coming weeks and months,” Roth said as part of the release.
