Fox announced the cancellation of “Empire” after its sixth season. The season five finale aired on Fox May 8.
“We are turning the final season into a large TV event — we are trying to go out guns a-blazing,” Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier said. “You allow fans to lean in and have the ending they deserve.”
The last season of "Empire" will be 20 episodes. Although controversy-laden star Jussie Smollett wasn't axed from the show, there are no plans for his character to return for the final season, Collier said.
“There’s an option to have Jussie in the series but we have no plans for that,” Collier said.
“Star” premiered in December 2016 and starred Queen Latifah, Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, Brittany O’Grady, Amiyah Scott and Quincy Brown. “Empire” premiered in January 2015 and stars Taraji P. Henson, Terrence Howard, Bryshere Gray, Trai Byers, Serayah, Gabourey Sidibe and Ta’Rhonda Jones.
