Despite the film going from traditional animation to live-action, the plot of the Guy Ritchie film stayed basically the same.

This time it is Smith, instead of a big blue Genie voiced by comedian Robin Williams, who grants Aladdin’s three wishes.

But there was one roadblock Smith and Ritchie needed to overcome, Williams himself. The original Genie and Williams were intertwined. But Smith believes he was able to put his own mark on the wish-granter, Entertainment Weekly reported.

"I started to feel confident that I could deliver something that was an homage to Robin Williams but was musically different," Smith told Entertainment Weekly. "Just the flavor of the character would be different enough and unique enough that it would be in a different lane, versus trying to compete."

Smith said he used his other on-screen personas to shape his take on Genie -- specifically those from "Independence Day," "Bad Boys" and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," Entertainment Weekly reported.

“Aladdin” will hit theaters May 24, 2019.
