Lala Milan, Jasmine Brand among celebrities lending support to cash-strapped local university’s $2 million campaign

A group of celebrities have lent their voices to a campaign aimed at raising $2 million for one of the Dayton area’s oldest universities.

"Boomerang" actress Lala Milan;  "Holes," "Walking Tall and "Roll Bounce" actor Khleo Thomas; "Madea's Farewell Tour" actor Kwaylon "BlameItOnKway" Rogers and reality TV stars Kat Tat of "Black Ink Crew: Chicago" and  Somaya Reece  of "Famously Single" appear in a YouTube video supporting  #WilberforceUnite, Wilberforce University's fundraising campaign for student aid, facility enhancements, faculty and staff development, and academic programs.

Jasmine Brand, the founder of the entertainment blog that carries her name, and DanRue, a dancer from MTV's "Wild'n Out," also appear in the video promoting the importance of Wilberforce and other historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

Brand is a graduate of Morgan State University, an HBCU.

The #WilberforceUnite campaign has a fundraising goal of $2 million by June 30,  according to Wilberforce Director of Public Relations and Marketing NaAsiaha Simon and a press release.

The campaign has raised $303,534 from 327 donors at the reporting of this story, Monday, June 17.

There are 14 days left in the campaign we first told you about in April. 

Wilberforce ran a deficit of more than $19 million in fiscal year 2017.

It was placed on probation by the Higher Learning Commission for that and other reasons.

The HLC is a regional accrediting body and is responsible for accrediting colleges in 19 states.

Located in Wilberforce and founded in 1856, Wilberforce is the nation’s first private historically black college or university.

The University of Dayton is the Dayton area’s oldest university or college. It was founded in 1850.
