JOHNSON, Janice 75, of Blountville, Tennessee, formerly of Springfield and Spencerville, Ohio, passed away December 4. Janice graduated from Springfield High School, and later became the youngest female real estate agent in the the city. She also worked in professional adminstrative roles, serving many years as the office manager for a medical office. Janice was a champion for the equal rights for disabled children and adults, instrumental in changing policies in education and accessibility at both the local and national levels. Janice enjoyed flower gardening, was an avid reader, and enjoyed hosting gatherings for family and friends. She also enjoyed sharing stories of her Kentucky childhood, her family's neighborhood grocery store in Springfield, and the many adventures with her best friend and husband of almost 58 years, Merle. Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Bessie Engle; her sister and brother-in-law, Charlene and Nick Nicholas; and her beloved son, Charles Johnson. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Merle (Dick); daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Rick Whiles of Blountville; three grandchildren, Logan, Ben, and Jenna; and many other friends and family. Janice was a member of the Shawnee United Methodist Church in Lima, Ohio. She attended Blountville United Methodist Church and Avoca Christian Church in Bristol, Tennessee as her health allowed. The family will receive friends at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville, Ohio, on December 8, from 1-2 p.m. Private graveside services will be held at 2:30 at Fort Amanda Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
