Salmonella outbreak from melon sold at Kroger, Walmart grows

Ohio has had more reported cases of salmonella poisoning in an outbreak from earlier this month than any other state.

Majority of the infection reports linked to pre-cut melon sold at Walmart, Kroger, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods Market and other stores began between March 14 and April 9, according to the Centers for Disease Control. During that time, 31 Ohioans reported salmonella-related illnesses. Indiana came in second with 23 of the 117 total reported illnesses.

There may be more cases that haven’t been reported yet, the CDC said.

The pre-cut watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe and fruit medleys containing any of the melons were supplied by Caito Foods LLL in Indianapolis. Affected states include Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota.

Diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps are symptoms of salmonella.

If you bought the precut melon under any of the following brands and stores, do not eat it:
