Mound Laser acquired by medical device maker

Mound Laser & Photonics Center Inc. will remain in Kettering but change its name following its acquisition Tuesday by New Hampshire-based Resonetics, the company’s top executive said.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Currently, Mound Laser has 80 employees. The company plans to hire additional local workers, said CEO Tom Burns.

Mound Laser will change its name to Resonetics in February “to allow time to educate current customers and make the necessary updates in their systems,” Burns said.

Resonetics, headquartered in Nashua, N.H., provides laser micro manufacturing solutions to the medical device and diagnostic industry. The Mound Laser acquisition will allow Resonetics to expand beyond its current focus on polymers and glass to offer customers a broader array of solutions and material expertise.

“We’re excited about the combined technology, know-how and experience that we can now deploy across a wide range of materials in many of the fastest growing segments of the life sciences industry,” said Tom Burns, Resonetics chief executive, in a statement.

With the acquisition, Resonetics now has the world’s largest capacity of ultrafast laser workstations serving the life sciences industry and can offer customers redundancy with manufacturing sites in the Eastern, Western and Central U.S., officials said.

Mound Laser began in October 1995 as part of the defense conversion of Miamisburg’s Mound Laboratory. The laser processing company now headquartered at Miami Valley Research Park serves the U.S. Department of Defense and clients in the commercial medical devices industry.
