Kettering Health to build larger Troy hospital than first planned

Kettering Health Network received approval from the city of Troy to build a larger hospital than it first planned.

The health network has a hospital under construction just outside of downtown Troy and was approved this week by the planning commission to add more than 30,000 square feet to the building than originally proposed.

The expansion will include three stories of unused space that will give the hospital the flexibility to expand if needed, said Elizabeth Long, spokeswoman for Kettering Health Network.

She said the health network decided to add oncology services at the future Troy hospital, which would have left the building completely full under the original plan. The expanded plans will provide enough room so the hospital can add beds or additional medical services as the need arises.

The planning commission unanimously approved the request. According to city documents, the building will now be 144,740 square feet, up from 113,500 square feet.

The hospital, contracted to Danis, has been under construction at 600 W. Main St.

When first announced in July 2017, officials said the $60 million hospital would employ 120 and have services like an emergency department, lab and imaging, surgery center and a medical office building for physician practices.

The new facility marks Kettering Health’s entrance into Miami County, which has been dominated by Kettering’s competitor, Premier Health and its affiliated Upper Valley Medical Center.

There’s been a recent increase in health care construction and expansion in Miami County.

Besides the Troy hospital, Kettering Health bought 7 acres in Piqua in May, thought hasn’t announced specific plans for the property.

Dayton Children’s Hospital is planning a new outpatient office in Troy, which will consolidate its area pediatric practices to one office and expand services.

Premier Health’s Upper Valley Medical Center has also been expanding its physician and occupational therapy offices at its outpatient center in Piqua. Upper Valley Medical Center in May also bought a neighboring office property for $2.35 million.
