Amazons announcement on Monday, Jan. 30, 2017, of a new air cargo hub in Kentucky is the latest way the e-commerce retailer is dipping its toe, or perhaps whole foot, into building out its shipping and logistics unit. If successful, the move ultimately means lower costs for Amazon but it could eventually pit Amazon against package deliverers like FedEx and UPS. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren, File)

Amazon to hire for more than 50,000 jobs this week, including in Ohio

Amazon is going on a major hiring spree, looking to fill more than 50,000 jobs this week — including at a distribution center in Ohio.

Amazon will hire for more than 50,000 jobs during its Amazon Jobs Day on Wednesday form 8 a.m. to noon. The online giant is looking to hire roles within its U.S. fulfillment network, and will open its 10 fulfillment centers across the U.S. for candidates to take a tour and learn more about working at Amazon.

Candidates can come on-site to learn more about working at Amazon and the technology it utilizes in its operations. The company plans to make thousands of on-the-spot job offers to qualified candidates who apply on-site as part of Amazon Jobs Day.

“On August 2, we are excited to host interested candidates to come learn more about the technology we utilize in our operations, see our dedicated onsite classrooms, meet employees and, if interested, apply for a job at our site and receive an on-the-spot job offer,” said John Olsen, vice president of Amazon’s Worldwide Operations Human Resources. “These are great opportunities with runway for advancement. In fact, of our entry level managers across Amazon’s U.S. fulfillment centers, nearly 15 percent started in hourly roles and were promoted into their current positions.”
