Two interesting tidbits from recruitment of one of Ohio’s top QBs

If not Urban, then Luke?

Wisconsin pulled off a recruiting coup last year in signing Chase Wolf, a star quarterback at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati.

In a review of the recruiting process, he told Land of Ten how the Badgers held on to him despite a push from Ohio State after his commitment.

Wolf: It was before one of our games. (Meyer is) friends with [St. Xavier] Coach [Steve] Specht because he actually coached at my high school. He was in the office. He just talked to me. He's like, 'So we're going to be able to flip you, right?' I'm like, 'No, no. We'll see you in the Big Ten championship.' He coached against my quarterbacks coach in the Sugar Bowl, and we kind of had a laugh about that, but that was about it.

Q: Was he being serious when he asked you to flip?

Wolf: He was serious. I talked to [Ohio State quarterbacks coach] Ryan Day. He asked if I was interested at all. I told him that I wasn't really that interested. But then a week later, he came into school.

That had been reported before, but something else in the story was new information for me: Wolf said while he wasn't tempted by OSU coach Urban Meyer's overtures, he might have listened to Luke Fickell's pitch if the University of Cincinnati coach had been more aggressive in trying to get him to play college football in his hometown.

Obviously recruiting will be the key to success for Fickell at UC, and he's done a good job with his first two Bearcats classes, but how much of a shot in the arm could getting a QB prospect like Wolf have been?

Wolf: I would say the local UC [Cincinnati], if they would have offered me or recruited me more. But I'm happy where I'm at right now, so I don't really have any regrets there.

Meanwhile, quarterback is the position that's often been the weakest link for the Badgers, so if they are going to break through and be a real national title contender, Wolf could be a big reason.
