South baseball closes down with loss to Piqua

South's baseball team played its last game in school history Monday, May 12, in a 6-1 loss to Piqua in a Division I sectional game.

Tim Thompson and Trey DePriest each had two hits, and Michael Cooper struck out eight in seven innings for the Wildcats (4-17).

In other baseball action:

• Blake Wirick hit a grand slam home run and Levi Wodruff and Levi Reed added three hits each as West Liberty-Salem (20-3) beat Graham 13-5, marking the sixth year in a row the Tigers (20-5) have won 20 games in one season.

Softball

Kylie Ford drove in two runs as third-seed Northeastern defeated sixth-seed Miami East 5-1 in a Division III sectional tournament game.

The Jets (17-8) hosts Versailles at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the second round.

In other softball action:

• Tecumseh (6-15) fell 7-2 to Edgewood in its Division I sectional tournament game.

• Brittany Mayse went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs, while Haleigh Hickenbottom had two hits and two RBIs to help West Liberty-Salem (26-0) complete an unbeaten regular season with a 10-0 five-inning shutout of Graham. Senior Emily Kauffman threw the one-hit shutout.

• Freshman Marta Lockwood went 4-for-4 and Megan Miller had three hits for Shawnee in a 4-1 CBC regular-season loss to Indian Lake.

Boys tennis

Northeastern earned a share of the Ohio Heritage Conference tennis title with Greeneview with a 5-0 win over Cedarville that also gave the Jets their first 15-win season in school history.

Sage Boggs, Adam Deel and Brandon Williams won in singles and the doubles teams of James Oswalt and Chris Precek and J.C. Shull and Blair Lehmkuhl also won for Northeastern (15-4, 7-1). This was the school's second league title since 2005, which the Jets also shared with the Rams. Northeastern's previous record for wins in a season was 14, set in both 1975 and tied in 2005.

In other tennis action:

• Wins from singles players Quinn Charney, Adam Walker and Kent Walpole helped Greenon (12-8, 9-7 CBC) beat Shawnee 3-2.

• Toby Jones, Nathan Shaw and Colin Taylor won in singles, while the doubles team of Adam Bennett and Ross Smith and Cody Hidy and Kyle Price helped Kenton Ridge (15-4, 14-2 CBC) shut out Northwestern 5-0.
