MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Late Saturday night, word circulated through the Wright State athletic department staff that Reggie Arceneaux was hoping for a small change.
Raised in New Orleans, La., and displaced to Charlotte, N.C., because of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Arceneaux has felt more like a native of New Orleans than Charlotte. He wondered if the team’s roster could reflect that.
“That’s my home,” Arceneaux said of New Orleans. “Charlotte is where I live and where my family lives, but New Orleans is always home.”
Starting with last Sunday’s game against Valparaiso, Arceneaux is now listed on the roster as from New Orleans with his high school listed as Charlotte’s Olympic High. He will also be introduced with the starting lineup as from New Orleans.
The situation is similar to Johann Mpondo. The 6-foot-8 senior forward is listed from Douala, Cameroon, as well as Decatur (Ill.) Christian High School.
Arceneaux said he hopes to represent New Orleans with his play, especially because coming from the city brings an attitude. He has started 15 times in 19 games this season and entered Thursday’s 58-38 loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee averaging 9.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.
“I think coming from New Orleans, there’s a certain swagger about you,” Arceneaux said. “Especially with sports and music, the two big things down there. Coming from that city, you try to have a certain swagger and grit about you.”
Game of the Week: Saturday’s WSU road matchup against UW-Green Bay is the Horizon League Game of the Week, which airs on television affiliates throughout league markets. The league Game of the Week, which will be each Saturday at 2 p.m., will air on Time Warner Cable Channel 99 throughout the season.
Jarring sight: Teammates gave WSU freshman Tavares Sledge some good-natured ribbing Thursday when Milwaukee received significant snowfall. The Brookwood, Ala., native, they joked, probably had never seen the stuff.
Not true. Back in October, Sledge mentioned he had seen snow “four or five times. Max.”
And when asked if he was ready for it when winter came, he shook his head: “When it’s cold and the wind’s blowing? Whew.”
