Wright State leading scorer Julius Mays and sometimes-starter Vance Hall will miss today’s road game against Detroit with injuries, the school announced Friday.
Mays, a junior guard and the only WSU player to average double figures in points at 13.4, suffered a strain to his left Achilles tendon and calf muscle on Jan. 8 in a game against Valparaiso. He played in two games last week but left Saturday’s game against Green Bay briefly after aggravating the injury in the second half.
Mays, who also leads the team in assists (2.7), minutes (32.5) and 3-point percentage (42.6), did not practice this week.
“We have plenty of games left, and we have to get him as close to 100 percent as possible,” WSU coach Billy Donlon said.
Hall sustained a concussion during practice on Thursday when he fell to the ground after grabbing a rebound, Donlon said. Hall averages 4.5 points and 20.4 minutes per game and has started nine times .
With their absences, WSU has three guards available who average at least 10 minutes per game: freshman Reggie Arceneaux (9.1 points per game), junior John Balwigaire (5.1) and sophomore Matt Vest (2.6). Two other scholarship guards are available in freshmen Kendall Griffin (1.3 points, 7.9 minutes per game) and Jason Cuffee (0.5, 6.9).
Wright State (9-11, 4-4) will be facing a Detroit squad (9-11, 3-5) with two preseason All-Horizon League first team guards. Ray McCallum, a sophomore and the league’s preseason player of the year, ranks second in the league in scoring (15.3 points per game). Chase Simon, a senior, is fourth (14.9).
“Jason Cuffee and Kendall Griffin are going to see minutes they’ve not seen,” Donlon said. “Every guy is going to play.”
