FAIRBORN — Dusty Baker, the Cincinnati Reds manager, will be the main speaker at the Jan. 27 First Pitch banquet sponsored by the Wright State baseball team.

“He’s a Sacramento guy, and so am I,” said WSU coach Rob Cooper.

Women open

Don’t forget about the basketball home opener for the women’s team at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19.

Although the women lost their opener at Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne on Saturday, they have four straight home games to regroup.

More help arrives next season as the Raiders signed seven during the early signing period, four from so close to campus they can almost walk.

The new Raiders will be Jessica Alexander (Xenia); Maranda Boddie-Cannon (Springfield); Kaitlin (K.C.) Elkins (West Jefferson); Courtney Boyd-Weeden (Brookville); Kirsten Gliesmann (Center Grove, Ind.); Mur Hagerman (Pendleton Heights, Ind.); and Elizabeth Kelly (Carlinville, Ill.).

Hagerman, by the way, is from the same school as men’s star Vaughn Duggins.

Herriman writing

Former WSU basketball player Delme Herriman, who runs basketball camps in his native England, is working on an autobiography. Another former Raider, Steno Kos, teaches grade-school physical education in his native Austria, and recently asked the WSU athletics department for a couple of T-shirts. They were sent.

Food drive

In addition to free admission to anyone wearing WSU gear to Tuesday’s men’s basketball game against Central Michigan (Kos now qualifies), the Student Athletic Advisory Committee will be hosting a canned food drive. Nonperishable food and monetary donations and will be accepted.

Digs honored

Freshman Stefanie Shiramizu won league defensive volleyball player of the week honors with a league-best 7.50 digs last week. She recorded a career-best 31 digs in a season-ending victory over Youngstown State.
