VALPARAISO, Ind. — The Wright State men’s basketball team did something better than it had all season on Saturday.

Unfortuately for the Raiders, so did Valparaiso.

Despite 24 turnovers (a season-worst by a WSU opponent), the host Crusaders shot a season-best 65.6 percent in beating Wright State 63-54 in front of 4,727 at the Athletics-Recreation Center.

The loss sends WSU (11-14, 6-7) to seventh place in the Horizon League while Valparaiso (17-8, 10-3) remains in second.

Junior guard Julius Mays had 20 points for the Raiders, who shot 29.6 percent and 5-of-24 from 3-point range.

“Our interior guys, we got whipped,” Donlon said of 13-of-15 Valpo shooting from 2-point range.

Valparaiso used a 14-2 scoring surge in the first half to lead 31-21 at halftime. The Raiders made 12-of-15 free throws in the second half to twice cut the deficit to five points, including 57-52 with 1:31 left on a Mays 3-pointer.

But the Raiders couldn’t get closer as Valparaiso scored eight points in the final 1:46 to split the season series with WSU.
