FAIRBORN — A busy week turned busier Sunday, Nov. 8, when Cory Stanton confirmed he told Wright State coach Brad Brownell he’ll be signing a letter of intent on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period.

Today, the Raiders introduce their season at a noon-time luncheon at the Berry Room inside the Nutter Center, then Thursday, the day after the first signing day, they head to Seattle for a three-game tournament that begins Friday.

Stanton, a point guard listed by Springfield (Tenn.) High School at 6 feet, might be an inch or two shorter than that, but his numbers are bigger, nearly 20 points a game and more than six assists.

“He’s a hell of a ‘get,’ ” said Andre Whitehead of Tennessee Prep Hoops. “He’s a great kid.”

Until last summer, Stanton had never heard of Wright State.

“I was with my AAU team in Indianapolis,” Stanton said. “Coach Mike Winiecki came up and talked to me. It was the first time I heard of their program, but I never shoot anybody down. Well, only Air Force and Navy, I shot them down.”

Stanton said he was sent information about WSU and when he visited, he found facilities to his liking. He also liked the coaching staff.

“It was all about the right fit,” Stanton said. “I have a great relationship with my high school coach, and I wanted a good relationship in college, too.”

Stanton will join Vandalia Butler’s 6-9 A.J. Pacher, 6-4 Kegan Clark of Jeffersonville, Ind., and 6-7 Cole Darling of Holt, Mich., as the signees this week.

WSU also has a commitment from 6-4 Matt Vest of Chaminade Julienne, who will practice with the team a year before accepting a scholarship in 2011.

Butler has no problem scheduling Georgetown, North Carolina, Ohio State and the likes and they come to their place to play as well. I think it is really good as well that Wright State will be playing a top 10 basketball team at the Nutter Center if Butler stays where they are. Helps the RPI pretty good too since the Raiders play them twice.

The funny thing about these arguments (UD v WSU) are the same arguments UD hears when they try and schedule Ohio State or Indiana to a home/home.

I'm also fairly sure that selecting basketball opponents so that UD's RPI is good enough on selection sunday doesn't come under the umbrella "Catholic morals".

Its hard to get those big name teams to come play. WSU by no means makes schools shake in their boots,....but we are good enough to give some good teams a run for their money.....and who wants to lose to a bunch of "redneck community college" players? UD certainly dosent.

Sounds like the coach out at WSU is building up the team a little at a time. Seems even though kids have never heard of Wright State and after talking to the coaching staff they want to know more about it. Hopefully the Raiders keep on plugging away. Good luck playing the Huskies in Washington this weekend and Mississippi State later on in the year. Seems the scheduling is getting better over there. They need to land a couple big name teams over there at their place and win a couple of them.
