FAIRBORN — As a point guard, part of Reggie Arceneaux’s assignment is distributing to a hot shooter.
This season, the Wright State freshman has eased his criteria for making that decision, because it can change quickly.
“If you hit one, most likely I’m coming back to you, do a little heat check,” Arceneaux said. “I have to get the right guy the ball.”
This season, that could be any number of Raiders. Heading into a road matchup tonight in Milwaukee, nine different WSU players have scored at least 13 points in a game this season, and seven have led the team in scoring in an individual game.
That’s an unusual amount of scoring changes, and it signals the Raiders’ developing offense. With four freshmen and four sophomores among 12 available scholarship players, WSU ranks ninth in the Horizon League in scoring (59.8 points per game) and seventh in shooting percentage (40.1).
But with 10 different players reaching double figures this season, the on-target scoring options change often.
“As an offensive coach, I think I’m pretty good to play for, because you have a lot of freedom with shot selection,” said WSU coach Billy Donlon. “I have confidence in the guys to make plays and take good shots.”
Recently, junior guard Julius Mays has become the clear go-to player. In the past six games, Mays has averaged 21.5 points while twice earning Horizon League co-player of the week.
In those six games, as WSU has gone 5-1, the Raiders have seen three different players lead them in scoring and three different second-leading scorers.
That includes Arceneaux, who is second on the team with a 9.1-point average.
“That’s always been me,” Arceneaux said of mixing scoring and distributing at point guard. “If it’s there, it’s there. Like a lot of these guys, I know I can score.”
