About Wright State

The Raiders lost two straight last week against Butler and Valparaiso to drop into seventh place in the Horizon League (teams Nos. 3-6 at season’s end host first-round league tournament games). Mays ranks fifth in the league in scoring and first in scoring in conference games (16.9 ppg). He had eight points against Butler and 20 against Valparaiso while adding a career-best seven rebounds against Valpo. The Raiders rank 41st nationally in scoring defense, allowing 61.1 points per game, but they are also 329th (out of 338) in scoring offense, at 57.9 points per game. WSU forced a season-high 24 turnovers against Valparaiso, and the Raiders force an average of 17.0 per game.

About Green Bay

The Phoenix dropped their last game, 81-75 against Milwaukee, after scoring back-to-back significant wins against Valparaiso and Butler. They are 0-5 in league road games and stand in eighth place. Sykes scored a career-best 25 points against Milwaukee last Saturday, continuing his improvement in the conference season that includes a 14.9-point scoring average in the past nine games. Brown set a Horizon League record in the teams’ last meeting with 11 blocks, and he ranks 11th nationally in blocks at 3.0 per game.

FYI

In the teams’ first meeting this season, WSU led by 17 points with 13:04 left before the Phoenix rallied to win 57-56 and snap a four-game losing streak in the series.

Quote, unquote

“Their freshman point guard Keifer Sykes is certainly a candidate for (league) Newcomer of the Year. He’s played very, very well here of late, and Alec Brown, in the middle, provides problems.” — WSU coach Billy Donlon.
