About Wright State

Raiders are a little short-handed to begin the season with guards Vaughn Duggins and John David Gardner out, Duggins by three-game suspension and Gardner with an injured hip.

Nonetheless, the Raiders are a veteran team and not intimidated by the reigning Pac-10 champions who are ranked No. 14 nationally. “We’re preparing for them just like Central State (last week’s decisive exhibition victory),” said junior point guard N’Gai Evans. This will be the 24th time WSU has faced a ranked opponent, and the record isn’t so good for the Raiders, who are 6-17 in these games.

Last season, WSU faced a ranked Butler three times and Wake Forest, losing all four. The last time WSU beat a ranked team was 43-42 over No. 13 Butler on Dec. 8, 2007, at the Nutter Center. At home, the Raiders are 5-1 against ranked teams. In neutral arenas, they’re 0-2. On the road, they’re 1-14.

About No. 14 Washington

Better known for its football teams (not necessarily recent teams), Washington won its first Pac-10 championship in the seven previous seasons under coach Lorenzo Romar last season. The Huskies are trying for their first repeat conference championship since winning three straight from 1951-53.

The team did share first place in 1984 and 1985. Three starters return, and they’re good ones. Isaiah Thomas might stand only 5-foot-8, but he’s on the long list of Wooden Award Candidates. He was Pac-10 freshman of the year and second-team all-league. Senior Quincy Pondexter averaged 21.5 points in two NCAA tourney games. Darnell Gant is the other returning starter.

When you think of the Pac-10, Washington may not come first to mind, but the Huskies are tied with California as the longest unbroken tenured team in the league (which has changed names a few times), since 1915.
