I’m okay with the Wright State University men’s basketball team deciding to skip both the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) and CollegeInsider.com postseason tournaments.
For this year.
I’m not saying winning either tournament makes a team rush out to hang that banner from the arena rafters, but I’ll admit the fields have some decent teams.
The CBI has George Washington, Saint Louis, Wisconsin-Green Bay and Oregon State among its participants. The CollegeInsider has Creighton, George Mason and Marshall among its teams. I’d be happy to see Wright State beat any of those teams in the regular season, let alone the postseason.
But not this season.
Wright State is taking some lumps for turning down a bid from either tournament. But sometimes paying to host a game or facing another game on the road after a long season just doesn’t make much sense. This is one of those years.
The Raiders are a little banged up physically, and they might be a little roughed up mentally, too.
They were a win away from their ultimate goal, but ended up with a lowly consolation prize.
Next year, I’d like to see the Raiders in a postseason tournament. Any postseason tournament. It’s a good way to build for next season, get returning players postseason experience and — should a title game be in order — a bit of national attention.
But not this season.
And besides, it keeps me from having to fill out another bracket.
