SPRINGFIELD — Wittenberg women’s basketball coach Sarah Jurewicz often shows recruits the Athletics Hall of Honor located just outside the door to Pam Evans Smith Arena.
It’s a good way to introduce them to the university’s rich history, and now it’ll be a good way to introduce herself.
Wittenberg announced this week that Jurewicz will be one of six individuals inducted into the Hall of Honor during 2009 homecoming weekend ceremonies Oct. 23-25.
“It’s a little surreal; I was pretty overwhelmed,” said Jurewicz, a 1998 Wittenberg graduate who remains the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,297 points.
Going into the same Hall of Honor that includes the late Pam Evans Smith, Jurewicz’s coach and predecessor, makes it that much sweeter.
The other inductees are:
• Joe Clayton: The longtime News-Sun sports staff member, who passed away in March, served as a volunteer statistician for numerous Wittenberg sports teams for more than 20 years.
• Tom Young: An offensive lineman for the 1969 national championship football team, Young was named a second-team All-American that season.
• Bob Wagner: This two-time all-conference offensive lineman went on to become the head football coach at the University of Hawaii.
• Sarah Newlin: A 1996 graduate, she still holds the women’s soccer program’s career and single-season records for saves. She was named the national player of the year in 1995.
• Joe Govern: Named the Ohio Athletic Conference’s top defensive player as a senior, this tackle led the Tigers to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division III championship game.
