GRANVILLE — Seth Parker almost didn’t play in Wittenberg’s 41-7 victory at Denison on Saturday, Oct. 31. He was almost Wittenberg’s latest flu victim, coach Joe Fincham said, but Parker recovered in time to get clearance to play.

Then the sophomore free safety put together one of the best games of his young career with two interceptions and a forced fumble at Deeds Field.

“From a speed standpoint, he’s as fast as any guy we’ve had in my time here,” Fincham said. “He’s dynamite on special teams. It was nice to see him make some plays.”

Career day No. 1

Zack Harris hit a 45-yard field goal in the final minute of the first half. It was the longest kick of his career and the longest by any Wittenberg kicker since at least 1997.

“There’s going to be a lot of good things we got out of tonight,” Fincham said, “but I’m not sure we’ll find a moment as good as that one. It’s going to give that guy even more confidence in some big games down the stretch here.”

Harris’ previous best kick was the 31-yard field goal he hit to beat Wabash.

Career day No. 2

South High School graduate Michael Cooper caught five passes for a career-high 123 yards, including a 69-yard touchdown catch that marked the longest pass play of the season for the Tigers.

Career Day No. 3

With two sacks, defensive end Eddie Vallery broke Wittenberg’s single-season record. He has 13 this season. That’s one more than David Smith had in 1991.

“Eddie’s ability to get after the quarterback is as good as anyone we’ve ever had,” Fincham said.

Around the NCAC

Allegheny (7-1, 4-1 NCAC) handed Wooster its second North Coast Athletic Conference loss, winning 24-21 in Meadville, Pa., on Saturday. The Gators, who play in Springfield on Saturday, Nov. 7, and beat the Tigers a year ago, got 312 passing yards from T.J. Salopek.

Allegheny is now 7-1 and 4-1 in the NCAC.

Wooster (4-4, 3-2 NCAC) visits Wittenberg (8-0, 5-0 NCAC) in the regular-season finale Nov. 14.

Wabash beat Oberlin 41-9 to improve to 7-1 overall. It shares second place with the Gators at 4-1.

Odds & Ends

• Wittenberg entered the week as the No. 3 team in the North Region of the NCAA Division III regional rankings. No. 2 Otterbein and No. 6 North Central both lost Saturday.

• Wittenberg hosts Mount St. Joseph at 7 p.m. Monday in its final junior varsity game. The reserve team is 2-2.
