SPRINGFIELD — Five individuals will be inducted into the Wittenberg University Athletics Hall of Honor during Homecoming Weekend festivities on Oct. 21-23, the school announced Friday.

Keith Ayers, Dick Fahrney, Steve Hanneman, Julien Lazarus and Danielle (Rogers) Good will join 189 athletes in the Hall.

Ayers, a 1960 grad, is third on the school all-time wins list as a pitcher on the baseball team.

Fahrney was an assistant coach on the football squad in the 1970s which won three national titles. He coached the offensive line, and also served as the school’s lacrosse coach.

Hanneman, a 1970 grad, lost just two high hurdles races on the track and field squad during his career. Lazarus, a 1999 grad, is the school’s most decorated swimmer, finishing runner-up in two events at the 1998 national meet. Good, a 1993 grad, remains the leader in both blocked shots and rebounds for the women’s basketball team.

NBA

Ming will likely retire from NBA

Houston Rockets center Yao Ming is retiring, according to a report by Yahoo! Sports. The 7-foot-6 Chinese star, plagued by lower-body injuries in the second half of his career, has informed the league office that his playing career is over, the website reported.

The Rockets have no comment on the report because of the lockout, and the NBA has not received official retirement paperwork from Yao.

Yao’s contract expired after last season, and the Rockets said they were interested in re-signing him if he came back healthy. Yao said in April that his professional future depended on his recovery from a stress fracture in his left ankle.

WEEMS: Sonny Weems has joined Zalgiris Kaunas of Lithuania, the first NBA player to sign a contract during the lockout.

Roger Montgomery, Weems’ agent, says his client signed the deal Thursday without an NBA opt-out clause. He believes with the league’s uncertain labor situation, it was “in our best interest to unpack our bags and stay the entire year.”

Weems played last season for Toronto and was a restricted free agent.

His death was announced Friday by the University of Kansas, where he once worked as an assistant. The school said he died Tuesday in Indianapolis.
