WILBERFORCE — Wilberforce University will say goodbye to two of the best 3-point shooters in Bulldog basketball history today when the men’s and women’s teams close out their regular seasons with a pair of Senior Day games at the Alumni Multiplex.
Andrecia Smith, a 5-foot-7 guard from Grand Rapids, is the lone senior on the women’s team that hosts Ursuline at 2 p.m. Earlier this month she hit nine 3-pointers, a school record, in a 39-point game against Mount Vernon Nazarene.
Tim Giles, a 5-foot-7 guard from Detroit, is the only senior for the men who meet Roberts Wesleyan at 4 p.m. Before coming to Wilberforce, Giles red-shirted a season at Kentucky State and then transferred to Wayne State, where he saw limited action.
In the first of his three seasons with the Bulldogs, he had 32-point games against Shawnee State and Rio Grande, hitting eight 3-pointers in each to tie the school record.
“Some other schools said I was too small, but Wilberforce gave me a chance to showcase myself,” Giles said. “It wasn’t always easy here, but it’s helped prepare me for the future.”
The Wilberforce men are 5-22 after winning a total of 19 games in the two previous seasons Giles was here. The Wilberforce women have won 24 games in Smith’s four years.
“This has been about more than just winning games,” Smith said. “I’ve had a good experience here and I’ll graduate in May with a degree in political science. Wilberforce was a good place for me.”
Athletic director Geoff Warren, who also coaches the men’s team, praised both athletes: “They’ve been good basketball players, great students and solid citizens. They’ve represented us well on the court and off. We’re going to miss them.”
