SPRINGFIELD — Donna Warfield finished second at the 2009 National Trail Parks and Recreation Springfield Women’s City Amateur Golf Tournament with a two-day total of 168.
She was steady throughout, but said she was not pleased with her swing after the final round Sunday, June 28.
“I had an 84 (Saturday) and worked like a dog. I had an 84 (Sunday) and worked like a dog,” she said. “But I had nothing to begin with, so for me to get an 84, I was quite pleased.”
Warfield’s par on No. 17 closed Carrie Frey’s lead to one stroke after she double-bogeyed the hole. Both bogeyed No. 18, and Frey claimed the title with a two-day 167.
“I wasn’t chasing anybody,” Warfield said. “I didn’t even know who won at the end.
“If I was playing good I would be aware of what’s going on. But when you’re struggling, all I’m trying to do is get up and down and get it over with.”
Also chasing the leader was Shawnee High School graduate Laaci Farris, who finished strong with pars on No. 13, 15 and 16.
Like Saturday, Farris said she had trouble with her driver. She salvaged some shots with her short game.
“I had some tough holes, but recovered well today,” Farris said. “My chipping was on.”
More in the future?
Both Warfield and Debbie Marshall, who finished fourth, want to see younger golfers in the Women’s City Am.
The total number of golfers in this year’s event, 36, is down slightly from previous years.
“There’s a lot of good golfers in Springfield,” Warfield said. “People get average golfers mixed up with pros. There’s not a pro out here. ... I would like to see more people come out to support this.”
“Those girls are so much fun. The younger golfers really need to get out and play in this,” Marshall said.
