Former Dayton player Joe Currin dies

Former University of Dayton basketball player Joe Currin died of a massive heart attack Sunday, July 18, while jogging in Venice, Fla. Currin, 38, was a corporate attorney for the Caterpillar corporation and had moved with his family to Singapore a few months ago. He is survived by his wife, Callie, and four children ages 5 to 9.

Currin, the son of former UD football star Jim Currin, was the youngest of 10 children. The entire family was vacationing together at the time of his death.

A graduate of Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Joe Currin was a walk-on basketball player at UD who worked his way into the starting lineup and appeared in 55 games. He played on the 1992-93 and 1993-94 teams coached by Jim O’Brien. He graduated from the UD law school.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, at Moeller High School, 9001 Montgomery Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Montgomery. Arrangements are being handled by Tufts Schildmeyer Funeral Home of Loveland.
