DAYTON — Second-seeded Rhode Island is making its Atlantic 10-leading seventh straight tournament appearance. The Rams won the championship at Fifth Third Field in 2005.

They will get a chance for a another title in Dayton today, May 23, when they play Xavier, who eliminated Dayton from the tournament. The game begins at noon.

The BoSox Brothers

University of Massachusetts brothers Mike Gedman and Matt Gedman are following in their dad’s cleat prints.

Rich Gedman spent most of his 13-year professional career with the Boston Red Sox and caught Roger Clemens’ 20 strikeout game.

The brothers kept UMass alive in the A-10 tournament with a 10-inning, elimination win over Charlotte on Thursday. Mike, a junior outfielder/pitcher, went 3-for-5 with a homer. Matt, a sophomore middle infielder, added two hits and two RBI.

Double trouble

Xavier junior Zac Richard, a Versailles graduate, is a double threat for the Musketeers. Offensively, going into Friday's game against UD, he was second in hitting (.353) and third in slugging percentage (.471). On the mound, Richard is 3-0 and ranks second on the staff with his 3.90 ERA. Opponents are hitting .233 off him, tops for XU.

His brother, Jon, will join Richard at Xavier next season.
