ST. PARIS — The West Liberty-Salem girls track and field squad had already lost to Urbana once this season.
They didn’t want it to happen again.
The Tigers put together a stellar performance at the rain-soaked Champaign County Track and Field Championships on Tuesday, April 28, beating the Hillclimbers by five points 116-111.
“It was great,” Tigers girls coach Shane Godwin said. “We talked about it earlier this week because we lost to Urbana as a team and we wanted to come out and take care of business. The girls did a nice job.”
Michelle Mack won the 400 in a time of 1 minute, 5.49 seconds, while Hillary Seely won the 3,200 in 13:06.74. Hannah Ropp also won the pole vault with a jump of 8 feet, 6 inches.
The 3,200 relay team of Kelsie Markin, Seely, Heather Bumbalough and Courtney Karg won in 10:53.32, while the 1,600 relay team of Markin, Mack, Bumbalough and Karg won in 4:36.22.
“With the conditions, I was proud of everybody,” Godwin said. “It was a great night.”
It was depth that guided the Tigers to the victory. They added seven second-place finishes to go with five champions.
“We don’t have a big team with just 20 girls, but everybody on our team participated,” Godwin said. “I think that makes it even better.”
Urbana’s Katie Raterman won both the 100 (13.29) and the 200 (28.24). Emily Addair won the shot put (34-4) and discus (105-6) for the Hilllclimbers, while Katie Finney won the 800 (2:38.11).
Graham’s Alex Taylor won both the 100 hurdles (17.09) and the 300 hurdles (50.96)
Triad’s Bobbi Custer won the 1,600 (5:53.70).
