After one round of play, the Ohio Heritage Conference girls basketball teams still are chasing unbeaten Triad High School.

Dating back to Jan. 15 of last season, the Cardinals (11-0, 7-0 OHC) have won 13 straight league games. They’ll resume OHC play Thursday against Cedarville (4-6, 1-5 OHC), then face second-place Greeneview (8-2, 5-1) on Jan. 21.

On Monday, the Cardinals beat Fairbanks 74-30 to stay unbeaten, winning their 14th straight regular season game.

The Cardinals will face a stiff challenge the rest of the way from the Rams and Mechanicsburg (7-2, 5-2).

No team has finished unbeaten in the OHC since 2008-09 when West Liberty-Salem finished 14-0.

Getting some respect: Undefeated Triad is the only area team to be ranked in the Associated Press’ first poll of the season. The Cardinals are tied for fifth in Division IV with New Riegel.

Rare game: Cedarville coach Ralph Grant saw something he’d never seen during his coaching career — one player score every point for her team.

That’s what happened with Sidney Christian’s Holly Spencer on Saturday in the Indians’ 41-15 victory. Spencer had all 15 points, surpassing 1,000 for her career.

“I didn’t realize (she had scored every point) until someone asked me,” Grant said. “I knew she was that kind of a scorer. We did a good job of stopping her. I was impressed with our defense. We got in the passing lanes well.”

The Indians have won two of their last four games, including Sidney Christian, without leading scorer Emily Sheridan, who sat out with an eye injury but hopes to return for the Triad game.

The Indians also won their first OHC game in two years on Dec. 8, beating Northeastern 36-32.

“I’m encouraged,” Grant said. “We haven’t played our best game yet. If we can control the ball and our turnovers, we’ll be more competitive and hopefully get a couple more OHC wins.”

Record-setter: Urbana junior Trischa Lacy made nine 3-pointers in the Hillclimbers’ 66-51 victory over Indian Lake on Saturday, setting the school record for most made 3-pointers in a game. Stacey Parker set the previous record when she sank eight in 1992-93 against Kenton Ridge.
