SPRINGFIELD — Everything looked good for Catholic Central when Brad Kelley caught a long pass from Brian Kelly, made a move between two Triad defenders, dropped the football and scooped it up to score a 56-yard touchdown.
That gave the Fighting Irish a 35-6 advantage late in the third quarter Friday night at Hallinean Field.
Triad mounted a furious comeback to climb out of that deficit and scored the next three touchdowns. The Cardinals trailed 35-28 and had possession twice in the final three minutes but couldn’t score again, and the Fighting Irish won the Ohio Heritage Conference opener by the same score.
Triad’s fourth quarter went like this: Colton Young completed a 9-yard pass to Tre McIntyre, then found him again for a two-point conversion with 10 minutes, 15 seconds to play and trailed 35-14.
Triad forced a Catholic Central punt, and Young hit Auston Sandford on a 48-yard pass. The Cardinals recovered the onside kick, and Addison Ford scored on a 2-yard run with 6:25 left to make the score 35-28.
Central halted the comeback with an interception by Jake Aldridge with 2:25 to go. The game ended with another interception by Michael Sheehan, after a big sack by Matt Neiswinger with 59 seconds left.
Both teams put up huge passing numbers. Kelly completed 17 of 35 passes for 273 yards and five touchdown passes, but he was also intercepted four times. Young completed 34-of-50 passes for 357 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.
Aldridge had five catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns, and Kelley caught five passes for 99 yards and one touchdown.
Dimitrious Dimitroff returned from an injury to catch four passes for 51 yards and two touchdowns, including a 31-yard TD reception on Central’s first play from scrimmage.
Sandford had 135 yards on 10 receptions and one score. McIntyre had 128 yards on nine receptions and one score.
