SPRINGFIELD — The postseason is almost here for girls basketball teams in Ohio.
The tournament draws will be held on Sunday afternoon, with sectional play beginning on Feb. 13.
Several area teams should earn high seeds.
Undefeated and state third-ranked Triad (16-0) could receive the No. 1 seed at the Division IV Sidney sectional, which includes several strong Shelby County League teams like Fort Loramie and Ohio Heritage Conference rival Mechanicsburg (12-3).
The Cardinals are off to their best start in school history. They finished 19-1 in 1997, falling in the D-IV regional semifinals.
Triad is hoping to make a deep run in the postseason after falling in the sectional final in each of the last two seasons, but they’re not thinking about it right now.
The main goal is defending their OHC title. They face three tough road games at Catholic Central, Mechanicsburg and Greeneview before hosting rival West Liberty-Salem in their final game of the season.
In the D-II sectional at Xenia, the top Central Buckeye Conference teams will try to avoid state top-ranked Carroll (16-0).
With the Patriots in one bracket, several strong squads, including Kenton Ridge (14-2), Tippecanoe (10-7), Greenon (12-4), Urbana (10-6) and Graham (9-7), could all flock to the other bracket.
The team who survives the sectional will likely face a tough matchup with the likes of Chaminade-Julienne (15-2), Alter (13-5) or Bellbrook (14-2). KR advanced to the districts in each of the last two seasons, falling to C-J and Alter.
Other teams who could receive a high seed at Sunday’s draw are Tecumseh (14-2) in the D-I super sectional and Greeneview (12-4) in the D-III sectional at Wilmington.
