URBANA — When the Arrows wanted to throw a pass, Riley Gault found an open receiver. When the Arrows wanted to keep it on the ground, Jeremy Strahan or Dustin Holmes had a huge lane to run through.
And when the Tecumseh High School football team wanted to score, the end zone never looked too far away.
The Arrows knocked out Urbana High School 49-7 in a Central Buckeye Conference crossover game on Friday, Sept. 18. Five different Arrows scored touchdowns, and Tecumseh had 337 rushing yards. The defense limited the Hillclimbers to 140 yards. Tecumseh (4-0) hadn’t won in Urbana since 2001.
“We made a statement tonight,” Gault said. “We didn’t want to leave any doubt on the field about who was the better team.”
The Arrows scored TDs on six of their seven drives, and Holmes had a 60-yard punt return for a score. Strahan rushed for 77 yards on six carries. Gault completed 6-of-14 passes for 138 yards and one score. He also scored two TDs rushing the football. Zeke Eier and Kyle Sanning also scored.
“We spread the ball around. Everybody can make plays, and that’s what happened tonight,” Gault said. That was apparent on the Arrows’ first drive, when Gault hooked up with Holmes on a 48-yard pass on its first play from scrimmage. Holmes then scored on a 4-yard run.
Meanwhile, Urbana (1-3) couldn’t move the ball against Tecumseh’s stingy defense. It didn’t help the Hillclimbers that quarterback Seth Young and running back/defensive back Anthony Marino missed the game with injuries.
Andy Keller was sacked twice and had little time to pass or set up running plays.
“Our D-line is pretty ferocious,” Tecumseh coach Kent Massie said. “They play hard, and they’re physical. ... They’re big, and they’re strong, and they’re fast.”
Urbana scored in the fourth quarter when Tim Melvin scored on a 2-yard run.
