NEW CARLISLE — Chelsey Davis’ last game at Tecumseh High School couldn’t have been more thrilling.

The Arrows 6-foot-1 senior post scored 18 points in a 67-35 victory over Shawnee on Saturday night, surpassing 1,000 career points for her career — by one. She’s now at 1,001 career points.

“I have to give big kudos to my teammates,” Davis said. “It was an amazing night. I couldn’t have done it without them. We feed off of each other.”

The Arrows (16-2, 8-1 Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail Division) have come a long way during Davis’ career. Davis and senior teammate Miranda Mougey were members of the Arrows’ squad that finished 0-21 in 2008-09.

They’ve improved each season since, going 7-14 in 2010 and 14-8 a year ago.

Davis said the Arrows kept taking bigger steps each time they stepped onto the floor.

“We’re a tight-knit group and we all stuck through it,” Davis said. “We had something to prove. We knew we had talent, and I think we’ve really made a statement this year.”

This year, Davis, who averages 15.6 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game, has combined with junior standout Bianca Quisenberry (22.7 points, 7.8 assists, 6.1 steals pg) to create a strong inside-outside punch.

“She’s finishing well, getting herself in spots where ‘B’ can hit her,” said Arrows coach Danielle Thomas.

Davis said balanced scoring has played a big factor in their success.

“Everybody’s putting up points,” Davis said. “That’s the biggest key to our winning. We couldn’t pull off the big games like we have this season without everyone scoring.”

Thomas also said Davis, a captain, is providing strong leadership on the floor. The Arrows’ losses came in games where Davis fouled out.

“She’s really matured,” Thomas said.

Thomas said Davis did a good job sticking with the program, buying in with the rest of her teammates.

“We kind of knew it was a process,” Thomas said. “She bought into everything we did in the summer. She could’ve had a bad attitude in the summer, and she didn’t. She’s managed to make her game better every year.”

Four years later, the Arrows are gunning for their first conference title since 1991. They travel to Kenton Ridge on Saturday at
7:30 p.m., and with a victory, they’ll earn at least a share of the CBC Kenton Trail.

“It’s nice to be in control of your own destiny,” Thomas said. “It’s up to us what we want to do. If we want a piece of the title, we have to show up and play a great game.”
