SPRINGFIELD — Alison Steinbrunner is excited about being a freshman again.

The Tecumseh High School senior will run cross country and track at Ohio Northern University this fall.

“There’s less pressure,” Steinbrunner said. But that doesn’t mean she won’t miss her Arrows coaches and teammates.

“I feel really lucky,” Steinbrunner said. “I have good coaches and a lot of support. A lot of my teammates and friends came to watch me even at the state meet. I’m lucky to have them behind me.”

They had plenty to cheer about. Steinbrunner went undefeated in all three individual events she entered during the season — including the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

For her accomplishments, Steinbrunner is the 2009 News-Sun Clark County Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Springfield High School girls coach Pete Smith is the 2009 News-Sun Clark County Girls Track and Field Coach of the Year after guiding the Wildcats to their first-ever Clark County meet title.

Steinbrunner finished her career at the Division I state track and field meet, where she placed fifth in the 3,200 in a time of 10 minutes, 57 seconds. She also placed seventh at the state cross country meet last fall.

Smith said one of his team’s main goals was to win the Clark County meet.

“We wanted to win the county to put track back on the map for Springfield (High),” Smith said.

He said the team got big help from assistant coaches Cory Bacon and Maria Moss, as well as the training staff.

“With all the injuries we had, it’s amazing we did as well as we did,” Smith said. “It was disappointing at the end, but the good thing is we’ve got everybody coming back for the most part.”
