NEW CARLISLE — In his first two plays from scrimmage, Dustin Holmes rushed for 52 yards. In his only two attempts, Riley Gault passed for 77. Of his four rushes, Zeke Eier scored on two of them.

It was that kind of night for all the Arrows.

The Tecumseh High School football team beat West Carrollton 55-23 on Friday, Nov. 6, in a Division II, Region 8 quarterfinal at Spitzer Stadium.

It is the most points the Arrows have ever scored in a playoff game, the second-highest of the 2009 season and more than their previous three games combined.

Holmes set the tone by putting the No. 3-seed Arrows on the 1 after those two runs. Kyle Sanning’s short dive made the score 7-0 after only 61 seconds had ticked off the clock.

“After that series, we knew they couldn’t stop us,” Holmes said. “We just took advantage of it and kept running the same plays until they stopped it, and it worked for us tonight.”

The Arrows (10-1 and No. 8 in the state poll) finished with 371 yards of offense, but no player had more than Holmes’ 85 rushing yards. Eier had 55 yards on four carries.

“They didn’t have an answer to stop us,” Tecumseh head coach Kent Massie said. “We got the ball in a lot of different kids’ hands, the kids did a great job of blocking up front and the kids did a great job of running and finding the holes.”

Holmes also had three punt returns for 131 yards. His 69-yard TD return in the first quarter put the Arrows up 14-2.

West Carrollton (8-3 and the No. 6 seed) used a 17-play, 81-yard drive capped by a 1-yard run by Loren Snow to cut the score to 14-9 to start the second quarter.

That was as close as the game would get. Jeremy Strahan answered with a 9-yard run, and the Arrows scored the next 41 points.

Tecumseh’s first-team offense scored touchdowns on seven of its eight drives.

On defense, the Arrows held the Pirates to 221 yards and two late touchdowns. Snow rushed for 124 yards and scored twice.

The Arrows will play No. 2 seed Cincinnati Winton Woods at a neutral site next Friday. Winton Woods, No. 6 in the state poll, beat Ross 59-7.

Tecumseh beat Winton Woods 14-13 in the 2006 playoffs.

... I forgot to mention the Wilmington win. I wish we'd had a longer run but Tecumseh is a great team and I wish them luck. If you want to talk about "class" maybe you should have a talk with yourself cmpw, because you've shown none.

Dear cmpw & Matt, You both should be ashamed! Remember these are KIDS your putting down. CMPW, yes there is an area in Moraine by GM called "dogpatch" but what does that have to do with how our team played?. Pre-season we beat Carlisle and Valley View, in season we beat Sprinfield Shawnee and Miamisburg. Give credit where it's due and stop making personal attacks, it makes you both immature. Great job Pirates, we are proud of you and to our Senior... what a way to go!

if people say WC has not played anyone this season if you count preseason the pirates have played six teams that made it to the playoffs

Great turnaround season for the Pirates. It was plain to see that Tecumseh is a great team that is used to winning. For WC, it will take another year or two to build that kind of culture. But after three years of miserable football, it was a great run for these kids and NOBODY expected it. Best of luck to the Arrows - if they play like this every week they should win the region.

One can go back to the early 80's to realise that, even then, WC transfered to a weaker league in order to win two championships. They won those years with Juniors, then seniors, who had all started as sophomores, while playing in a much tougher league. The cupboard wasn't bare, as the then coach suggested. It was loaded with experience; and about to win championships in a lessor league!
