Wildcats’ DePriest ready for Under Armour game

Alabama-bound standout linebacker selected for all-star game in Florida.

SPRINGFIELD — Trey DePriest is finished with high school, but area fans have one more chance to see him play prep football before he leaves for the University of Alabama.

DePriest, a Springfield High School linebacker, will play in the Under Armour All-American game on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on ESPN. The game will be played at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.

DePriest will play for Team Click Clack (the red jerseys).

Playing on live TV in front of a national audience might be daunting. DePriest doesn’t look at it that way.

“It doesn’t really bother me,” he said. “It should be fun. You don’t pay attention to any of that once you’re on the field.”

DePriest was asked to participate in the Under Armour game after performing well at last year’s junior combine. His skills were on display when he ran step-for-step with several of the fastest players at the combine, and also flexed his muscle in the weight room.

Now he’s got a chance to play against some of the best incoming college freshmen in the country.

Of the 90 players in the game, 70 are listed on the ESPNU 150 Player Rankings. DePriest is ranked No. 36.

“I think he’ll do well,” Springfield head coach Rick Robertson said. “He’s just got that feel on the field, and I think that will transfer to the all-star game. Physically he’ll be ready. Every day he’s busting his butt.”

It’s going to be a busy month for DePriest, who verbally committed to play football at Alabama on July 30 and was named Ohio’s Division I Defensive Player of the Year after the Wildcats went 9-3.

He attended his last class at Springfield on Dec. 17. He’ll play in the Under Armour game on Jan. 5. When he comes back from that, he’ll head for Alabama on Jan. 9 to start classes.

Braxton Miller, a former teammate of DePriest’s who attended Wayne High School, will also play in the Under Armour game as part of team Micro G (the white jerseys).
