SPRINGFIELD — Erick Collins had been, as he described it, in the wrong spot most of the night. But the Springfield High School senior defensive back found himself with the game-winning interception nonetheless Friday, Sept. 25, as the Wildcats beat Trotwood-Madison High School 20-13 in overtime at Evans Stadium.
Springfield struck first in OT when Trey DePriest scored on a 1-yard run. It was his second overtime TD this year.
Trotwood had an incomplete pass on its first overtime play. That’s when Collins, the Wildcats’ free safety, surveyed the field.
“The mistake I made all game was following the tight end, but this time I sat back in coverage,” Collins said. “The receiver ran the post, they made a play on it, and I just caught it. That ended the game. ... That was the best interception I’ve ever had.”
It was a see-saw battle to that point. Springfield scored twice in the first quarter, and Trotwood twice in third. Through the first half, the Rams were missing a spark, with 57 total yards.
Springfield (4-1) rolled up 205, and had two TD passes from George Walker to Lamar Davenport.
Trotwood scored on a 27-yard pass from Graham to A.J. Jordan, then on a 10-yard run from Marcus Gilbert. As Trotwood drove for the winning score in regulation, Onslow Williams had an interception to send it to overtime.
“Once (the Rams) didn’t make that play, I knew in overtime we would win,” Collins.
Marcus Graham finished with 175 passing yards, and the Rams totaled 240. Springfield had 261 total yards, 190 on the ground.
Trotwood played without head coach Maurice Douglass, who was not on the sidelines. Assistant coach Jeff Graham was the acting head coach.
