Former Springfield High School assistant football coach John Cupps, currently the head coach at Marion Harding, announced he has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Wildcats’ vacant football opening.

Cupps went 3-7 at Marion Harding in his first year with the Presidents last fall. Cupps has 17 years of coaching experience, including stints at Graham, his alma mater, South and Springfield.

Springfield had 34 applicants for its position on Jan. 8. Superintendent David Estrop said earlier this month they’re hoping to have a recommendation to the Board of Education prior to board meetings on Jan. 26 or Feb. 8.
