SPRINGFIELD — Northwestern High School senior Chelsey Ball won two events on the first day of the Clark County track and field championships at Shawnee High School on Thursday.
Ball won the shot put and the discus for the Warriors.
Shawnee’s Carly Gregory won the pole vault with a leap of 8-0.
In the boys meet, Greenon’s Josh Bannick won the shot put with a toss of 51-0.
Northeastern’s Josh Rowe won the discus (132-6), while Tecumseh’s Jeremy Herdman won the pole vault (13-0).
The throwing events and pole vault were moved from Springfield to Shawnee. The throwing area at Springfield is flooded due to the recent weather.
The meet will continue today at Springfield at 5 p.m.
Baseball
Jordan Hitt had two hits, and Joe Cooke hit a home run as host Southeastern (14-3, 9-3 Ohio Heritage Conference) beat Mechanicsburg 4-2 in a game that was shortened to five innings by rain.
Alex Huffman went 3-for-3 for the Indians (7-6, 7-4 OHC).
• Triad improved to 14-0 with a 3-2 win over visiting Fort Loramie.
Colten Young got the complete game win for the Cardinals, who played for the first time since Monday, April 18.
• Zach Reed hit a three-run homer as West Liberty-Salem (11-7) beat Fairbanks 11-1.
• Brad Bronhorst had three hits and Eric Reed added eight strikeouts in six innings as Greeneview (8-4, 6-2 OHC) beat Northeastern 10-4.
Tyler Ford hit a two-run shot for the Jets (4-12, 4-7 OHC).
Boys Tennis
Nauman Rauf outlasted Derek Miller 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in first singles as Springfield (9-4) blanked West Carrollton 5-0.
• Zack Wildofsky beat Doug Burkett 6-1, 6-1 to improve to 12-4 in first singles as Northwestern (7-5, 7-3 Central Buckeye Confernce) beat host Urbana 4-1.
Softball
Jamie Dean had two RBIs, including a game wining single in the sixth inning, as Mechanicsburg (8-5, 8-3 OHC) beat host Southeastern 6-4 in a game shortened to six innings by rain.
Hayley Banion hit a three-run home run and Shelby Hocter added a solo shot for the Trojans (8-5, 8-3 OHC).
