SPRINGFIELD — The Northeastern High School soccer team got a big result last week when it played Division III 11th-ranked Catholic Central to a scoreless draw.

“It was definitely a big boost for our season,” said Jets coach Dayna Ranard.

It was even bigger because the Jets (3-2-3, 2-1-2 Ohio Heritage Conference) have struggled with injuries this season. They were down to 13 players against the Irish.

“When you play a team like that, you’ve got to play smarter, especially when you don’t have many subs,” Ranard said. “The girls did exceptional. I have some girls who really stepped up.”

She praised her team’s effort on defense to shut down a team like the Irish.

“You don’t lose games playing great defense, but you can tie games,” Ranard said. “I’m really proud of them.”

The Jets are missing four players with injuries — senior Shelby Cavanaugh, junior Ashley Hamm, sophomore Shelby Lanier and freshman Shelby Chobot.

But Ranard knows her team will keep playing hard.

“It’s just been one of those seasons,” she said. “It happens. The girls have really stepped up and they’re enjoying themselves.”

Megan Simpson leads the Jets with 10 goals.

Big games: There are several big nonconference games this weekend.

The Catholic Central boys squad, ranked third in the D-III state poll, will host Cincinnati Summit Country Day on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Silver Knights beat the Irish 1-0 last season.

The Northwestern girls, ranked eighth in the Miami Valley coaches’ poll, will travel to D-III sixth-ranked Waynesville on 1 p.m. Saturday.

Also, the Greeneview boys will take on Franklin Monroe at Columbus Crew Stadium at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
