SPRINGFIELD — The Kenton Ridge High School girls basketball team has always traveled over the Christmas break.
In the past, it has traveled as far as Florida and California to play in holiday tournaments.
This season, however, the Cougars stayed close to home, playing at the Braggin’ Rights Classic in Mason, but made a big statement with two victories over out-of-state teams.
They beat Stone Mountain, Ga., 101-55 on Dec. 28. Four players scored in double-figures: Paige McCrary (30), Lindsey Fenwick (25), Mariah Harris (19) and Sara Thornton (10). McCrary and Fenwick combined for 12 3-pointers.
“The first game, we were on fire,” said KR coach Ed Foulk. “(Lindsey Fenwick) started off the game hitting just about everything she shot, then she got in foul trouble and then (Paige McCrary) took over.”
They faced their toughest task of the season in their second game, beating Digital Harbor, Md., 54-45. Digital Harbor (8-2) was ranked second in the Baltimore area and has two Division I recruits, 6-1 Maryland recruit A’Lexus Harrison and 6-5 Penn State recruit Infiniti Alston.
Foulk said the key so far has been conditioning.
“We’re just in better shape, and we’re getting a little more balanced scoring,” Foulk said. “We’ve got more depth than we’ve had in the past.”
The Cougars (8-1, 3-1 CBC) lost for the first time Wednesday, 78-77 at Tippecanoe. They travel to Tecumseh (6-1, 2-1) on Saturday.
Speaking of Tecumseh: The Arrows will face a tough task against Lorain at the upcoming Classic in the Country, the annual Martin Luther King Day girls basketball showcase, at 11:45 a.m. on Jan. 16.
The Titans (6-1) were ranked 13th in the latest Cleveland Plain Dealer poll. They feature highly-recruited prospect Alex Harris, a 6-foot-3 post player.
OHC clash: Unbeaten Triad (9-0, 6-0 Ohio Heritage Conference) will travel to rival West Liberty-Salem (7-3, 3-3) on Saturday.
Last year, the teams split the OHC title, each picking up double-digit victories on their home floors.
