SPRINGFIELD — The Southeastern High School girls basketball team was just one point shy of a berth in the Division IV regional finals.
The Trojans fell to Tri-Village 44-43 in overtime in a D-IV regional semifinal in front of an estimated 1,500 fans at Springfield High School on Thursday, March 11.
“I thought we played our hearts out,” said Southeastern coach Jim Lightle. “We were very evenly matched. We just came up a point short.”
Sophomore guard Jenna Erwin had 23 points and 14 rebounds, while senior Amber Rice added 13 points for the Trojans, who finished the season 15-10.
The score was tied at 34 at the end of regulation, but after trading baskets, the Patriots (19-5) made 5-of-7 free throws to take a 41-36 lead. The Trojans pulled to within three points twice, but wouldn’t get any closer until Erwin’s 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Shaye Thomas had 12 points for Tri-Village, including eight in the overtime — six from the line.
“I thought we did a great job on (Tri-Village post player Kayla Linkous), but (Thomas) picked it up and hit her free throws,” Lightle said.
Southeastern led 34-32 after Erwin hit one of two free throws with 31.1 seconds remaining in regulation. But with 16.4 seconds to go, Linkous tied the score on a layup.
She was fouled on the play and had a chance to give the Patriots the lead, but missed the free throw. Southeastern junior post Jasmynn Snyder held Linkous, who scored 61 in a sectional game earlier this season, to just seven points.
The Patriots had several fouls to give, and kept Southeastern from getting a shot off at the buzzer.
The Trojans trailed 29-28 in the fourth quarter, but five straight points by Rice gave the Trojans a 33-32 lead with 2:45 remaining. However, turnovers and Tri-Village offensive rebounds gave it a chance to tie the score.
“I thought if we got the lead in the fourth quarter we could get to the free-throw line and ice the game away,” Lightle said.
