WYOMING — Despite close calls in each of the last three weeks the Wyoming High School football team is still undefeated.
Shawnee will try to give Cincinnati Wyoming its first, and last, loss when the teams meet in the Division III, Region 12 final at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at Welcome Stadium in Dayton. Youngstown Cardinal Mooney and Wyoming are the last of the eight remaining D-III teams yet to lose a game in 2009.
But the Cowboys had to work to stay undefeated. In the final game of the regular season, they beat Indian Hill 50-49. In the playoffs, they beat Eaton 34-32 in the first round, then Monroe 14-7 in the second. The Cowboys trailed in all three games.
Wyoming (12-0) has set the school record for wins, while quarterback Kyle Seyfried and defensive lineman Jibreel Black were named the D-III Southwest District players of the year.
Black has seven sacks and will play at the University of Cincinnati next year.
Seyfried has passed for 3,023 yards and 37 touchdowns with just five interceptions. Three players have over 600 yards receiving: Harry Meisner (a team-high 934 yards), Evan Aleshire (a team-high 14 touchdowns), and Jonathon Tighe.
“Their quarterback is very athletic, and they have big receivers, and they can all run,” Shawnee coach Rick Meeks said.
The Cowboys have been to the playoffs 17 times, and this is their first regional appearance since 2000. They won the Class AA state title in 1977.
