NEW CARLISLE — Sixty-five seconds was all the Tecumseh High School boys soccer team needed.

Neil Lindsey found Justin Helt in front of the net in the second minute to give the Arrows a lead they’d never relinquish en route to a 6-3 victory against Central Buckeye Conference rival on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at Tecumseh’s Spitzer Stadium.

“It was a nice goal,” said Arrows coach Jason Runner. “It was nice for us to get up like that and get the momentum going.”

Jordan Gozelski and Alberto Gonzalez each two scored two goals, while Chase Culbertson added the other goal for Tecumseh, who improved to 3-1 and 2-0 in the CBC. Lindsey had two assists and Kyle Keeton added another.

“We knocked the ball around well,” Runner said. “We moved it well from side to side.”

Cody Carpenter had two goals for Greenon (1-2-1, 1-1 CBC) and Kody Phelps had the other.

Gozelski scored his first goal eight minutes into the match to make it 2-0. The 6-foot-4 central midfielder also scored Tecumseh’s last goal, dribbling through several defenders before pounding it home.

“He’s got long legs and a burst of speed,” Runner said. “He’s very tall. You can see him. When he comes through flying like that, you think you can stand him up, but he’s got a quick first step.”

Phelps brought Greenon to within one with 30 minutes remaining, but back-to-back goals by Gonzalez gave Tecumseh a 4-1 halftime advantage.

The second goal came on a beautiful free kick which landed square in the right corner from 40 yards out.

“He’s goal-hungry,” Runner said. “He’s going to take shots, and he struck it beautifully. He hit it into the upper right 90. He put it there thinking if someone is going to get it, they’ll get it. But that’s our big thing, put it on frame and make something happen. Putting it over the goal is a waste.”

Runner said the goal is to keep winning within the CBC so that they can control their fate down the road.

“It’s right there for us, our destiny,” Runner said. “In the past, we’ve gone and played hard and lost a game or two, and we’ve had to rely on others. I’m tired of relying on others. It’s time for us to take control of what we need to do and just do it.”
