New football coach takes over at Greenon

ENON — John Jewell has less than two months to establish his program as the new head football coach at Greenon High School before the 2009 season officially begins.

So of course Jewell, officially hired Monday, June 22, had a busy first day.

After the team’s morning training session, Jewell met with the players, brought in a new assistant coach and spoke to other potential coaches. He’s got an idea about how the offense will look and was impressed by the Knights.

“It went great,” Jewell said of his first day. “The guys worked hard. They got in there just like a normal day and got after it.”

Jewell was offered, and accepted, Greenon’s head football position on Friday, June 19. He replaces Tim Hale, who was removed as the Knights’ head coach earlier this month after formal complaints were made against him and another assistant, Tad Steinbrink. Hale’s five-year record was 27-23.

“I don’t know anything (about Hale’s departure) and I kinda want to keep it that way,” Jewell said. “I told the guys this morning after workouts were over, ‘What happened in the past stays in the past. We’re moving forward from here; this is the end of it and there will be no more talk about it with our football program.’”

That’s the correct approach, said Greenon athletic director Dave Marshall.

“When you lose something, there’s still going to be attachments there and feelings there,” he said. “We’re not going to forget, but it’s just something that’s got to be put in the back of our minds and we’ve got to move forward. I think kids are probably a lot more adaptable to that than we, sometimes, as adults are.”

Jewell, 35, comes to Greenon from Kentucky Christian University in Grayson, where he was an assistant for three years. He was also a middle school coach at Shawnee for two years.

Jewell received his teaching degree from KCU in 2009 and will teach social studies at the high school.

Forty-one athletes attended training Monday, and Jewell said he hired an offensive coordinator, Kevin Finch.

Practice officially starts Aug. 3, and training continues through the summer.

I've been watching the boys practice for weeks now and it seems as though our new coaches have a handle on things. I think Greenon will have a fine team this year, through the hard work of the players. My son has plans to play at the next level. I would hope this program would help him to achieve this goal. Coach Jewell so far has conditioned these boys very well in my opinion. He has certainly earned my support.

It's a sad day when the board allows the kids and parents to run the sports programs. Congrats you have shown these kids who is really in charge.TEAM is a big part of football & if your child is not with the team how dare you whine about the coach, extra help is one thing but not being part of YOUR TEAM is a disgrace i'm just glad my son won't be part of this group of CRY BABY SPOILED BRATS! WAKE UP you let a good coach go, a person YOU hired to instill a team atmosphere and a guide these kids.

Coaches are like parents A-HOLES. We guide our kids just like coaches so that when they go into the world or on the playing field they are ready & prepared. If things could be done in 1 pratice then all NFL players would be relaxing instead CONDITIONING. FOOTBALL is a PHYSICAL SPORT & coaches need to make sure players are ready. It's called SPRING TRAINING!So when your son gets hurt don't go crying to the coach that he was not prepared Good Luck & I will miss supporting Greenon. Go Graham!

Another "lamb to the slaughter." We wish Coach Jewell luck, but hope he realizes that he will have to play by the parent's rules or his days will be numbered. I've been in this community almost 40 years and nothing changes. The administration doesn't support their teaching or coaching staffs, they take orders from "influencial" parents in the community. Coach Jewell will need all the integrity he can muster in the days to come.

Coach Jewell is a man with great integrity. He is driven to be the best and will do everything in his power to not fall short of his goal. Coach Jewell will be a incredible coach, leader, teacher, and mentor to the football players and students at Greenon.
Go Knights!
