MECHANICSBURG — Hopes are high for the Mechanicsburg High School bowling teams. Both the boys and girls season are coming off superb seasons, and each squad returns enough talent to do it again this winter.

The boys team, coached by Troy Boggs for the fifth season, finished a perfect 16-0 last year, winning the Ohio Heritage Conference with a mark of 10-0 and advancing to the state meet, where it finished 14th.

Two years ago, the Indians finished fourth at state, so they have the potential to contend at the highest level. Already this season, they have made a mark, finishing first out of 16 teams at the Red & Blue Classic on Saturday.

“We can make it out of sectionals,” Boggs said. “We’re in the hardest district. Troy’s probably the best. If we get out of there, it’s a plus.”

If the team doesn’t make it, senior Kyle Mayberry has a great chance to return to state as an individual. He placed 23rd last year. Through three matches this season, he was averaging 244, about 30 pins ahead of last year.

“If he doesn’t go to state, something’s wrong,” Boggs said.

The boys team also returns two more All-OHC bowlers, senior Dalton Boggs and junior Corey Hosier.

The girls team will be strong again as well. It also won the OHC title last season, going 13-1 overall and placing fifth in the sectional.

The Indians finished second at the Red & Blue Classic, and senior Megan Gaver placed second overall.

“We’ve got three seniors who are returning,’ coach Dave Bush said. “We’ve got a bunch of underclassmen coming up. We’ve got 17 girls out this year.”

That’s the biggest team Mechanicsburg has ever had.

“I didn’t have to do a lot of recruiting,” Bush said. “Quite a bit of it’s word of mouth. I was surprised. There were a couple that quit the basketball team and ended up coming over and joining us.”
