SPRINGFIELD — For the first time in Greenon High School girls basketball coach Gary Falkenbach’s tenure, the Knights are off to a 4-0 start.
They used a strong comeback to beat Miami East 59-51 on Monday. They’re tied atop the Central Buckeye Conference Mad River Division standings with Urbana at 2-0.
The Knights started 4-1 during the 2007-2008 season, but dropped their opener to Stebbins.
“I’m excited,” Falkenbach said. “We want to keep it rolling.”
Falkenbach said the team hasn’t played its best basketball yet, and is finding ways to win games.
“We’re growing up in that aspect,” Falkenbach said. “We’ve got a lot of weapons and different kids stepping up every night.”
The Knights have six seniors who are doing a great job of being leaders and helping them stay together.
“That’s what I liked about last night,” Falkenbach said of the Miami East win. “There was never a doubt (we could win).”
They’re led by senior Whitney Robinson (11.0 points, 4.8 steals, 4.8 assists) and junior post Heather Slaughter (11.0 points, 10.3 rebounds). Sophomore guard Lianne Masquelier is also distributing the ball well, averaging 6.5 assists per game.
Defensively, the Knights are stopping their opponents. They’re allowing a league-best 39.5 points per game.
They’ve got a big road stretch coming up at Shawnee on Thursday and at Urbana on Saturday before coming home to host Wayne on Monday.
“We’ve got to be poised and take care of each possession,” Falkenbach said.
Big numbers: Kenton Ridge is putting up huge offensive numbers this season. The Cougars (4-0, 2-0 CBC Kenton Trail) are averaging 86.8 points per game this season, nearly 26 more than Tippecanoe, the second-highest scoring team in the CBC Kenton Trail.
They’ve got four players — Mariah Harris (20.0), Paige McCrary (18.5), Lindsey Fenwick (15.7) and Samantha Wiederkehr (13.3) — averaging double-figures in scoring.
The Cougars host Stebbins at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Cougars coach Ed Foulk will be looking for his 500th career victory.
First win: Springfield coach Duncan Thomas picked up his first victory with the Wildcats on Monday, beating Ponitz 56-40.
They’ll look to make it two in a row against winless Trotwood (1-3) tonight at 7:30. The Wildcats haven’t won back-to-back games since a four-game winning streak in December of 2009.
